Businesses are concentrated in the Rhine-Main district, centred around Frankfurt am Main, the largest and most important city. The area’s economic vigour is also enhanced by the Rhine-Main airport, the most important air transport hub on the continent. Frankfurt has become the key banking centre in continental Europe with both the headquarters of the German Bundesbank and around 400 other banks represented in the city.
In addition, the metropolis on the Main is also a venue for major international trade fairs.

Hesse’s twelve public higher education institutions and three state theatres have a decisive impact on cultural activities here. Wiesbaden, the state capital, is renowned as a congress and spa city.
Furthermore Hesse has the highest percentage of forest proportionate to its size of all the federal states in Germany, making it an ideal recreational and holiday destination. To mention but one example, Kassel, a city in the north of Hesse with internationally acclaimed art collections, is well worth a visit.
