הגדלה (© dpa-picture alliance) Saarland is a pioneer among the German federal states when it comes to progress towards a united Europe. In conjunction with partner regions in Lorraine and Luxembourg, it now forms a European model region, in which cultural exchanges and cross-border cooperation are part and parcel of everyday life.
This European know-how also benefits the Saarland as a business location. Modern growth sectors have long emerged alongside the old core activities of coal and steel, which characterised this federal state’s industrial culture for more than a century. Well-developed technological infrastructure and research facilities closely linked to businesses are already paving the way for success in the markets of the future.

Saarland is a small federal state, which at the same time makes it compact and close to its citizens. Particular emphasis is placed here on measures to support families, children and older people, as well as on environmental protection. As a result Saarland can boast one of the densest networks of childcare facilities and solar energy plants in the whole of Germany. The social mood here promotes quality of life, with a sense of being rooted in the region yet also open to the world.
This is underpinned by the cosmopolitan spectrum of cultural activities in the state capital, Saarbrücken, in conjunction with the attractive mountainous landscapes in the Mittelgebirge region with its vast expanses of forest and significant industrial heritage sites.
